What is lymphoedema?
The lymphatic system is a network of vessels and glands (lymph nodes) that removes excess fluid from the body’s tissues and helps to fight infections – this is why you may notice swollen glands when you’re ill.

Sometimes, the system doesn’t work properly. This leads to a build-up of protein-rich fluid (lymph) in the tissues. Typically, this swelling affects the arms and legs, but other areas can also be affected.

What are the symptoms of lymphoedema?
The main symptom is swelling in the affected body part. It may be a whole limb, part of a limb, or another body area. The body part can feel achy and heavy, and difficult to move. The overlying skin may become thickened and tight also.
Causes of lymphoedema
Lymphoedema may be primary, due to a problem with the development of the lymphatic system. Or it may be secondary, due to damage to the lymphatic system. Common causes of secondary lymphoedema are:

  • cancer treatment (surgery or radiotherapy)
  • infection, such as cellulitis
  • injury, such as widespread bruising or soft tissue damage
  • inflammatory conditions that cause redness and swelling, such as psoriasis or atopic eczema
  • conditions affecting blood flow, such as deep vein thrombosis or varicose veins
  • obesity
  • long-term immobility
How do our practitioners treat lymphoedema?

Manual (or Medical) Lymphatic Drainage is a specialised form of massage, widely used in the NHS and other healthcare settings. It uses specific, light strokes to encourage lymph to drain through the system and to stimulate lymph node activity.

Our qualified MLD therapists can work with all forms of lymphoedema to ease swelling and discomfort and improve immune function.

Osteopaths can also help manage lymphoedema by addressing restrictions in joints and soft tissues that may be impeding lymphatic flow. In addition, they use various techniques designed to gently pump the lymphatic system.

And beyond the treatment room, our practitioners can supply you with tips and techniques to use at home to help manage your condition.
