What Is Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome?

Chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS) is a complex condition that affects men of all types and ages. It’s characterised by pain in the pelvic area that lasts for longer than three months, and it affects around 8% of men worldwide.

The causes of CPPS are wide-ranging and can be complicated. They are thought to involve an interplay of inflammatory, infectious, neurological, musculoskeletal, and psychosomatic factors.

Men are more likely to suffer with CPPS if they have pelvic floor dysfunction, urinary infections, constipation, prostatitis, kidney stones, overactive bladder, hernia, joint hypermobility, hip impingement or a hip labral tear.

Common symptoms include:
  • pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic floor
  • lower back, groin and thigh pain
  • discomfort during urination or ejaculation
  • testicular pain
  • urinary symptoms, such as frequency and urgency

Our approach to treating CPPS is holistic – we look at all the factors that might contribute to your symptoms, including stress, breathing patterns, posture, habits, and more.

What To Expect
Here at GHC, we have a range of effective treatment options for CPPS. Our team evaluates your whole health to understand the best approach for you. If suitable, we can offer treatments in combination to give you rapid, long-lasting relief.
Osteopathy for CPPS
We use a wide variety of approaches and treatment techniques to alleviate your pain. These might include:

  • myofascial release techniques for the pelvic floor
  • trigger point therapy
  • joint mobilisation and postural alignment
  • neural techniques to reduce nerve tension and irritation
  • rib and diaphragm work to improve breathing function and reduce pressure in the abdomen and pelvis

Our collaborative approach means we will work with you to identify and reduce things that may aggravate your symptoms in your everyday life – whether that means changing the way you sit, adjusting your daily habits, managing stress levels, or learning how to release pelvic floor tension.

Acupuncture for CPPS
Acupuncture has been shown to be an effective, safe option for CPPS, with patients reporting up to 50% decrease in symptoms. Fine, sterilised needles made of surgical steel are inserted at various places and may remain there for up to 30 minutes. You may notice a dull ache or tingling sensation.
Shockwave therapy for CPPS
Focused shockwave therapy offers rapid and proven relief from CPPS symptoms, with relief both immediate and lasting into the long term. Shockwave therapy is a safe, non-invasive, drug-free option for treating this complex condition.

A handheld device is placed against the skin. High-energy waves are transmitted through the body to the area to be treated. You may feel a strong vibration. There may be mild discomfort, but no more than that.

Please note that certain techniques may require you to remove your underclothes. This will be discussed with you, if required, and if you wish to continue, you will be provided with a consent form.
