What Is Coccydynia?

Coccydynia refers to pain in the coccyx, or tailbone. It’s most commonly caused by a fall to the base of the back, which can bruise, fracture or dislocate the coccyx. It can also be triggered by repetitive strain from activities like cycling or rowing, or prolonged sitting on hard surfaces.

Typically, you experience pain when sitting on a hard surface and when rising from a seated position.

What To Expect
We have various treatment options to resolve the pain of coccydynia, which can be combined to provide you with rapid, effective relief.
Osteopathy for coccydynia
Manual therapy techniques can be highly effective in relieving coccyx pain by improving mobility, reducing tension, and addressing musculoskeletal imbalances.

Osteopaths carefully assess the movement of the coccyx and surrounding structures, using soft tissue techniques and pelvic floor therapy to ease discomfort and restore function. The coccyx itself may be gently manipulated, along with the pelvis, lower back, and hips, to promote better alignment, postural balance, and overall mobility.

In some cases, internal mobilisation may provide the most effective relief. This specialised technique, performed via the rectum, allows direct access to the coccyx for precise adjustments. Our osteopaths are fully trained in this delicate procedure, ensuring a professional and respectful approach. If deemed appropriate for your condition, your osteopath will thoroughly explain the process, including its benefits and potential risks, so you can make an informed decision. A consent form will be provided should you choose to proceed.

Beyond hands-on treatment, your osteopath can also recommend targeted stretches and exercises to support recovery and prevent recurrence of pain. Additionally, they may suggest ergonomic modifications or lifestyle adjustments to help you manage symptoms effectively.

Focused shockwave therapy for coccydynia

Shockwave therapy is an effective and lasting treatment that can reduce the pain and inflammation of coccydynia, enhance blood flow and stimulate healing. With little in the way of risks or complications, it can ease symptoms quickly and safely.

Your qualified shockwave therapist will apply a gel to the area being treated and use a handheld device applied to the skin, which delivers shockwaves in short pulses. You may feel a strong sense of vibration.

Sessions last around 30 minutes, and no anaesthesia or recovery time is necessary. Your therapist will also provide advice on stretching, exercises and other steps you can take at home for long-lasting results.
