What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a distressing but common condition – around 50% of men experience it during their lives.

It’s defined as the persisting inability to achieve an erection sufficient for sexual activity, and it can stem from many causes. These include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, nerve damage, hormonal imbalances, stress or lifestyle factors.

For many men, muscle weakness and tightness, circulatory issues, nerve dysfunction and postural imbalances contribute to the symptoms. Surgery, trauma, or exercise that can stress the pelvic floor – such as running or cycling – can all lead to dysfunction of the muscles, connective tissues, nerves, arteries and veins.

While medication often plays a part in treating ED, we can provide a number of other effective treatment options to manage or resolve your symptoms.

What To Expect
We can offer various treatments for the management of ED. If appropriate, you may wish to combine treatment approaches for the best outcome. Your therapist can advise you.
Osteopathy for erectile dysfunction
Good sexual function relies on a healthy balance within the anatomical structures of the pelvis and beyond.

By treating tightness, trigger points and weakness in the muscles of the pelvic floor, we can help restore normal function. Osteopathic treatment will also normalise joint mobility in the pelvis, hips and lumbar spine – essential for correcting tension imbalances and for good nerve function.

Alongside treatment, we can advise you on stretches, exercises and adaptations you can make at home to boost your function.

Acupuncture for erectile dysfunction
Acupuncture can improve the symptoms of ED, alone or in combination with medication or other treatments.

Fine, sterilised surgical steel needles are inserted in various points of the body (not in the genitals). The needles may remain in place for up to 30 minutes. You may feel a dull ache or tingling sensation.

Shockwave therapy for erectile dysfunction
Focused shockwave therapy (F-SWT) offers new hope to men struggling with erectile dysfunction. Rather than symptomatic relief, it targets the root causes of ED.

High-energy soundwaves, delivered via a handheld device, promote angiogenesis (the formation of new blood vessels), improving circulation – a main factor in ED.

What’s more, the benefits of shockwave are long-lasting, with studies showing better function continues for months after treatment is complete.

Shockwave therapy is safe, non-invasive and free from side effects. Improvements can usually be felt within a few sessions, and there’s no downtime. It’s also safe to use in combination with medication.

A handheld device is placed against the skin. High-energy waves are transmitted through the body to the area to be treated. You may feel a strong vibration. There may be mild discomfort, but no more than that.

Please note that certain techniques may require you to remove your underclothes. This will be discussed with you, if required, and if you wish to continue, you will be asked to sign a consent form.
