Understanding Chronic Pain

At the Good Health Centre, we like to use the term persistent pain as opposed to chronic pain in the consulting room.

The term Chronic gives the impression that its fixed and immovable as opposed to persistent which is more changeable.

We now understand that the reasons for persistent pain can be multi factorial. The diagnosis and treatment approach need to match.

What does that mean? Well, we need to understand you a lot better to appreciate all the possible contributing factors in your life that might be causing this.

Our treatment approach will follow by introducing a variety of different modalities of care.

For example, we will explore the following:

  • Body function and movement
  • Balance
  • Visual field
  • Sleep patterns
  • Previous medical history
  • Operations and traumas
  • Nutrition
  • Stress and Resilience

By covering all these and many other subjects we can better understand you and your coping strategies and identify blocks to recovery.  Once achieved, understood, and shared we devise a bespoke treatment plan with you in mind with clear goals.

Throughout the treatment plan we will review your progress to make sure we are on track.

Chronic pain amongst the UK population is a major concern as the number of people suffering is increasing year on year. If you are experiencing pain for over three months you are a chronic pain sufferer.

Prevalence of chronic pain in the UK: a systematic review and meta-analysis of population studies

BMJ Open 2016;6:e010364. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2015-010364

Conclusion:
Chronic pain affects between one-third and one-half of the population of the UK, corresponding to just under 28 million adults, based on data from the best available published studies. This figure is likely to increase further in line with an ageing population.

I started seeing Josh last year in preparation of my first marathon. I'm a big believer that prevention is better than the cure and I felt I was carrying a few minor ailments. I see him every 6-8 weeks and discuss my current training and niggles which he works on resolving and suggests different exercises and stretches to improve moving forward. Following the sessions I feel more flexible and balanced and I'm training for my second marathon. I'd highly recommend the Good Health Centre and Josh. He's a great osteopath and person!

Josh is an excellent osteopath (with physiotherapy experience). He is a keen runner and so has great insight into running injuries. When I first went to see him I had been misdiagnosed twice and was feeling quite helpless. In our first session he diagnosed me with an adductor tendinopathy and gave me a rehab plan that developed through our sessions. After a handful of appointments I am back running and will definitely be back for checkups to avoid future injuries. I would recommend Josh to anyone with a running injury. 💯

Currently seeing osteopath here who is lovely and very soothing touch with my sciatica. I've been popping so many painkillers as the pain in my leg has been so extreme. I'm hoping she can cure my bad sciatica altogether... Well worth the price not to mess your stomach up from all those painkillers!!

I was seen by Simon today to review an ACL injury. Simon combined gentle manipulation with acupuncture, and gave clear guideance around exercises I can do to help my healing process. The reception team are so welcoming adding to the experience of the centre, love my chats about the science of curly hair!
