What Is Reiki?

The word Reiki comes from the Japanese words “rei,” meaning universal, and “ki,” meaning life energy. Mikao Usui founded ‘Usui Reiki Ryoho’ which is the most current form of Reiki, in 1922. However, people have practiced Reiki for over 2,000 years.

Reiki is a form of complementary therapy related to energy healing. Reiki works with the energy fields surrounding the human body and involves the movement of universal energy from the practitioner’s palms to the client.

According to medical science it has been proven that energy can stagnate in the human body especially where there has been physical injury or emotional pain. Over time, these ‘energy blocks’ can lead to discomfort, illness and possibly disease.

This type of healing practice aims to help the flow of energy through the body and remove such ‘blockages’, similarly to the principles applied through acupuncture or acupressure.

This school of practice believe that improving the flow of energy around the body may induce deep relaxation, restore balance, reduce stress and anxiety and even support patients suffering with depression.

Reiki experts point out that although this energy is not measurable with modern scientific techniques, many patients who ‘tune into it’ can feel it.

How Can It Help Me?
Although Reiki is not considered to be an ‘exact science’ much anecdotal evidence suggests that it may induce deep relaxation, thus assisting in the body’s natural healing processes. This in turn can have a positive effect on ones emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being.

Some of the conditions that Reiki has been reported to help include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Long Covid
  • Neurodegenerative Disorders
  • Autism
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Chronic Pain
  • Infertility

It is important to reiterate that Reiki should never take the place of medical treatments and all complimentary treatments should be taken under the advice and care of your doctor.

What To Expect

The gentle , non- invasive nature of Reiki therapy often has a powerfully soothing and deeply relaxing effect on the patient’s over all well-being.

The purpose of your Reiki session is to reinstate the balance and flow of vital energy through the body. Your Reiki treatment involves your therapist channelling energy through their hands and attuning it to the receiver’s body; enhancing the patient’s natural ability to heal itself.

Although perhaps a less ‘mainstream’ therapy, Reiki is much-loved and highly respected by those who practice it and by those who receive it.

Cautions & Care

Treatment is very safe and can by used alongside conventional medical treatments. However, you should tell your practitioner if you are having any other medical treatments – be they complementary or conventional.

We advise our patients to rest after a reiki treatment and drink lots of water.
